The Perfect Atmosphere
The unique climate of the Gorge makes it ideal for growing several types of wine. Between the temperate rainforest of the Cascade Locks and the high desert of The Dalles, there are several microclimates that mimic the best grape-growing regions in the world: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone and Rhine. Cathedral takes advantage of that and makes wine from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Alsace grapes.
While you taste at the Cathedral Ridge Winery, you’ll look out over the undulating grasslands that surround Hood River and spot the verdant vineyards that dot the dry landscape on either side of the river. During the summer months, grab a bottle and bring it down to the beach, where you’ll marvel at the dramatic stunts of kitesurfers and windsurfers riding the massive white caps of the Columbia River. Whether it’s spring, summer or fall, you’ll find a cadre of salmon fishers testing their luck on the great river.
Tastings
The winery offers several tasting options, ranging from $15 per person (with $5 discount for each bottle of wine purchased) for a standard tasting to $90 per person for a private event that includes tastings straight from the barrels, a vineyard tour and small appetizers served along the tour. You’ll tour the barrel room and the vineyard. It’s the best during the crush season, from late August through October.
