A woman enjoying Earth Hour in Hood River

March Oregon Celebrations: Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and Earth Hour in Hood River

As we enter the new year thinking that since the holidays are over, we can finally breathe, we soon learn how wrong we are. March comes rolling in like a lion on the hunt, “forcing” us to celebrate three new holidays! Mardi Gras, St. Patrick’s Day, and the impactful Earth Hour are fun, exciting, and in the last instance, a worthy cause, but aren’t you ready for a break? If you’re planning on being in Hood River during any or all of these wonderful holidays, there’s no need to hit the town and celebrate until you’re sick; browse this guide to Oregon celebrations in comfort and style in your Hood RiverVacations Rentals holiday escapes will help you have the time of your life!

Mardi Gras, March 5th

Fat Tuesday is a holiday that’s all about gluttony and beads! We eat too much, drink too much, and generally wake up on Ash Wednesday feeling like we’ve been run over by a steamroller a few dozen times! This year, come to Hood River, where spring is just about to make her presence known, the temperatures stay cool and comfortable, and beads can be purchased at the Dollar Tree, 1799 12thStreet, for fun at home celebrating! Start your day with a pastry from the Pine Street Bakery and end your night with a few Hurricane cocktails you blended yourself; what you do with the beads is your own business!

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th

While this guide is more about staying in, there is one St. Patrick’s Day event that will have you stepping out. The St. Patrick’s Day Cellarmaster’s Brunch, held at Cathedral Ridge Winery from 11 AM until 2 PM, allows you to get a little extra celebrating in on this special occasion! Only 48 tickets ($65) will be sold, so call 541-386-2882 for your chance to brunch and wine a little. If you miss out, you can still drink plenty of green beer at the Oak Street Pub with more than a few fellow Irish-for-a-dayers or stick with the original plan of staying in! There’s no wrong way to celebrate, as long as you’re doing it while staying in one of our Hood RiverVacation Rentals holiday escapes!

Earth Hour, March 30th

Earth Hour is more of an event than a holiday, but it’s an important one that is easy to accomplish! Starting in Australia in 2007, countries all over the world have taken an hour (in this case, from 8:30 PM until 9:30 PM) to keep the lights off. Yes, all you have to do is flick off the switch and you’re contributing to a reduction in energy waste, light pollution, and an improvement in the environment! And while you’redoing your part to save the environment, there’s no law saying you can’t have a little fun! Simmer in the hot tub, if your home came with one, sit by the fire, and spend some time talking without any electronic interruptions—or simply enjoy a glass of wine on the patio, enjoying the cool night air!
