Reasons to Visit Hood River in the Winter

There are many important decisions that need to be made in your life on a daily basis. What schools your children should attend? Should you apply for that new job? When is it time to buy a new house?Isn’t it nice when you have decisions that aren’t important at all that need to be made? Pick which shoes go with that dress, whether to get chocolate or red velvet cupcakes from the bakery, or our personal favorite, a destination for your winter vacation. We’ve made the last decision an easy one with this guide to the reasons you should visit Hood River in the winter, but if you’re obsessing over the cupcake question, we say life is short—get them both!

Old-Fashioned Christmas Cheer

Our favorite part of winter in Hood River is, of course, the holiday season, and when you visit during Christmas, cutting your own Christmas tree is a favored local tradition in Hood River. There are Christmas tree farms such as Hamburg’s 4D Tree Farm, located at 36731 SE Hauglum Road in nearby Sandy, or you could simply pay a $5 fee to cut yours in the Mount Hood National Forest (passes can be purchased at Tum-A-Lum Lumber, 408 Highway 35).Either way, nothing brings a family closer together than a new tradition, and cutting your own Christmas tree promises to be the one for your family.

Coffee and Pastries

Yes, coffee and a pastry make for a wonderful experience during any season, but a winter morning spent at Doppio Coffee is a treat you will never forget. The coffee warms your soul and the pastries warm your heart, while the modern surroundings of our favorite coffee shop simply please. Try their chocolate croissants and discover yet another reason your winter vacation in Hood River was one of the best decisions you’ve made all year!

Sledding with the Children

The thrill of sledding down a hill on a cold winter day is one of our favorite memories, and when you are visiting Hood River in the winter with your own children, it allows you to step back in time and relive your childhood. Little John Sno Park, located off OR-35 on Mount Hood, is a popular hot spot in Hood River, only allowing inner tubes and sliding discs for the safety of sledding kids of all ages.Snow-Park permits are required and can be purchased at the ski resort, many of the local ski shops, and at the DMV.
